New Year: Fresh Start

Happy 2015 Royal Natives!

I don't know about you guys but all I can think about is cleaning, organizing and getting my head on straight again after all the holiday madness. And another thing, I'm trying to use my phone less and as a result get more done instead of losing focus checking Instagram every 10 minutes. Am I the only one that is sitting at my computer with email open and then checks it on their phone also? Please say no!

So back to the point which is that this month (I'm starting small) I am going to clear my workspace and focus on the task at hand. I spent the day on Saturday at my factory in the garment district starting production on Spring's Rockaway Baby collection. I cleaned out all the old fabric, reorganized the shelves and decided on what to recycle and reuse for new Playa zippered pouches and Montauk totes. Not only will the space be more efficient but we are promoting less waste by not throwing awesome leftover fabric away.

Today I purged my home office of papers (shred and recycle) and moved a lot of stock, shipping materials and samples around for easier access. Now when I sit down to write and do research for future collections I can actually concentrate! It is very hard to be inspired when you are surrounded by clutter. Clear your space and the ideas will have room to flow and grow.

A note on prints and patterns

It's funny sometimes when I think about my passion for African Wax fabric, as well as Batiks and Hand Blocked Indian prints, considering that I mostly dress in solids with the occasional stripe thrown in for good measure. However and hear me out on this please, the prints themselves when turned into a pair of shorts or a pillow can go with anything especially when your other pieces (a top or a couch let's say) are basic. If I ever take one of those style quizzes I end up "discovering" that I am all of the above: Classic, Minimalist, Bohemian, etc. which makes total sense to me. And the thing is African prints can be all of the above too depending on how you style your outfit or room. When I began creating and designing Royal Native my one goal was to keep the silhouettes as classic and timeless as possible, with minimal bells and whistles and let the prints be the bohemian gypsies. Put your own spin on your Royal Native. And don't forget to send me a pic.

Holidaze

It's been way too long since I've posted a newsletter! We are in the midst of the holiday season and been busy doing some great local shopping days and crafts fairs. Shopping small businesses and supporting artists and makers is very important to us at Royal Native. Of course there are times when a trip to Target is needed but for the most part I always try to buy gifts from the people that create, design or make their own products. Buying American made small batch goods are so important to our country's health and much more satisfying to give and get.

On another note: we took a short but much needed trip to Tulum, Mexico and it was a perfect place to test drive our Resort collection and be inspired for next Summer's mini collection as well. The prints against the heavenly natural backdrop that is Tulum made for some amazing photo ops. We will definitely be returning next year. We stayed at the best little 8 room hotel, ate fresh fish tacos on the beach everyday for lunch and of course rode bikes, had drinks at Posada Margarita, ate a spectacular dinner at Hartwood and got some divine perfume from Coqui Coqui. And last but not least attended the wedding of our gorgeous friends at Be Tulum, a must see it to believe it hotel on the beach. It's been a great Fall and we are excited for some snow and then of course Spring and the beautiful clothes it will bring!

It's NYFW and I'm dreaming of Fall

It's Fashion Week in NYC and the temps are high. Everyone is eager to rock fresh new Fall threads while watching Spring 2015 walk down the runway. I am not that into Fashion Week (sorry, not sorry) but I do love to check out how all the bloggers, editors and buyers have styled their fabulous selves for the shows and of course parties! All the inspiration out there for future Royal Native collections....and I can see it all from the comfort of my own home. Meanwhile with my Spring samples at home in the showroom I am now dreaming up Summer 2015. Spring was all about NY and Rockaway Beach and for Summer I've drifted off to Ibiza and Mykonos. Can't wait to show you all! Hard to be in the present moment in the fashion world, but it sure is fun!

Resort 14 Photo Shoot

Yesterday we shot the Look book for Resort 2014! Chris Krieb, a local photographer and friend captured the laid back late 1960's-early 1970's vibe perfectly. Casey Diego wore the Hawaiian inspired clothes like they were made for her. The collaboration was so much fun and we can't wait to share the photos with you! For now you can see some sneak peeks on our Instagram, FB and Twitter feed...
